What many apps get wrong about personalization
Most calorie apps use a formula called Mifflin-St Jeor to estimate resting energy, then apply a physical activity level to turn it into a daily calorie target. The formula uses your age, height, weight, and sex, so the result looks personalized. However, it is based on population averages, not a measurement of what your body actually burns.
The problem gets worse when an app lets a watch or ring change your calorie target. A precise-looking calorie-burn number can feel measured and personal, but it is not a direct measurement. It is an inaccurate guess.
When an app adds those estimated calories back to your food budget, it stacks an inaccurate wearable estimate on top of a rough formula estimate. That can reduce or erase the deficit you intended to create and work directly against your goal.
The problem is well documented. One systematic review examined 158 publications covering nine wearable brands and found that no brand accurately measured energy expenditure. Another review found energy-expenditure errors above 30% across every brand it assessed.
While smartwatches and rings can still be useful for workout motivation, heart rate, and steps, their calorie estimates should not determine how much you eat. BareVue does not let those estimates change your calorie target.

What BareVue does differently
BareVue starts with Henry/Oxford, developed from 10,552 measurements and a broader, more modern evidence base than Mifflin-St Jeor. If you know your body-fat percentage, BareVue can instead use Katch-McArdle so your lean mass is factored in. It is a better estimate than Mifflin-St Jeor, but it is still an estimate.

What does TDEE mean?
TDEE means total daily energy expenditure: all the energy your body uses in a day for basic functions, digestion, movement, work, and exercise.
Do I have to weigh every day?
For the clearest and fastest adaptation, weigh daily or as frequently as practical under similar conditions, ideally in the morning after using the bathroom and before eating or drinking. BareVue can still adapt with approximately weekly weigh-ins, but more frequent records give it a clearer signal and allow it to adapt faster.
How long does adaptation take?
BareVue begins learning as complete food logs and weigh-ins become available, then keeps refining the calculation. There is no single timeframe that is honest for everyone. Frequent, consistent records help the result settle sooner.
What happens during pregnancy?
